Divorce schedules is promoting equality for lorry drivers

Swedish public service, SVT, reports that road transport companies in Värmland, Sweden have invented a new approach to promoting equality and attracting women to the profession.

Divorce schedules accommodates the needs of divorced lorry drivers by matching their driving schedule with their custody arrangement. During the weeks when the driver’s children are living with their former partner, the driver will travel longer routes and have more overstay nights. And during the weeks when the driver’s children are living with them, the driver will work on a shorter schedule closer to home. This allows drivers to spend more time with their families.

Employers are also targeting women directly to increase female representation in the business. According to the Swedish Association of Road Transport Companies, accepted students to the Värmland region’s transport high schools are now 49 % women.
