Stockholm City has procured a new bike rental system which will begin service during spring 2022. The old bike rental system with 800 bikes was discontinued in 2018 because of bike theft and vandalism.
The new bike rental system will provide 5150 bikes and 120 cargo bikes, all electrical assisted and can be locked during the rental period. The bike rental system will be financed by its users and advertising spaces on the bikes. Renting bikes will be affordable for the users as the price varies from 1 euro a day to 15 euros a year. To rent a bike, users will have to use an app for payment, except for 30 locations that will be equipped with credit card readers. The bike rental system will have fixed locations for parking and will be available throughout Stockholm.
The Scandinavian hub is advocating for bike rental systems that do not follow the ‘one size fit all’ model but rather supports the diversity of different groups of citizens. The new bike rental system in Stockholm provides users with options of electrical bikes which is a step towards increasing accessibility. The affordability of the system is also positive and can potentially contribute to transport justice in Stockholm.
