Global economy, gender and the impact of Covid-19

A recent article by Melinda Gates discusses how the pandemic’s impact on women can impact worldwide economic recovery and growth. Gender equality programs promoting inclusion can avoid potential losses of trillions of pounds in global gross domestic products. Melinda’s piece resonates TInnGO’s intersectional proposal, looking into how policy planning and execution need to account for how transport, in all its aspects, influences our gender dynamics. Health, labour access and household distribution are considered in such a view, where freedom of movement and transport are essential in securing accessibility and equality. Resonating with TInnGO’s proposal on gender and diversity visibility, Melinda highlights the importance of incentivising female (and diverse, we would add) leadership. This can help to mitigate current impacts and shape more equal measures for a post-pandemic world. She states, “We have to keep this on the forefront of the agenda. That’s exactly why I wrote this paper. If we don’t look at the health systems, the economic systems and how we can build back, if we don’t look at the data or the female leadership or use those women’s collectives, we’re not going to build back in a better way. We’re going to have a very, very long slow recovery across the globe.”
