The summer of 2020 will certainly remain in the European history of aviation because Simona Maierean, a 33 year old Romanian Lieutenant-Commander, became the first woman in Europe to obtain the highest certification possible: aircraft commander of the Strategic Air Transport Group within Strategic Aircraft Capability (S.A.C.)
Starting at the age of 24, Lieutenant Commander Maierean wrote history within the Romanian Air Force, being the first woman fighter pilot in Romania. Then she carried on her dream of becoming a copilot on C-17 Globe master aircraft within the Strategic Aircraft Capability, Papa Air Base, Hungary. The end of this June brought her the supreme certification as the first woman in Europe to become a certified aircraft commander within this Capability.
“You must know what you want and assume all decisions you make, not to give up at the first obstacle. Just two months ago, Simona set another amazing example of performance and professionalism, during the Covid-19 crisis. After a 40 hour mission piloting a C-17 Globe master, she landed in Romania with an essential cargo of 100,000 protection overall suits from South Korea, an enormous help to the Romanian authorities coping with the pandemic.
